Have you heard of the hairy lychee, Lykkers? The thick, soft spines cover the outside, like a natural armor, protecting the juicy, vitamin C-packed fruit inside.
When the skin changes from green to red or yellow, it indicates sweetness. Just like lychee, there's a seed in the center, so be cautious when eating. Rambutan is in season from October to March in Hawaii, so grab some before it's gone!
If you've got your hands on some rambutan! Here's how to keep it fresh:
Pop it in the fridge, and it should stay good for about two weeks, though this can vary depending on when it was harvested.
If you prefer it at room temperature, you can leave it out on the counter for 1-2 days.
And hey, if you've got more than you can eat right away, you can freeze it for up to six months with the outer shell on.
Just remember, while frozen rambutan is still tasty, it's best enjoyed fresh!
